Is hearing voices actually something bad — a sign of mental illness? Or might it be an internal source of support, a kindred form of psychic healing coming to us from beyond?
At Yale University, a new collaboration between psychics and psychiatrists is teaming together to answer this question.
Psychics help psychiatrists make sense of internal voices
The idea behind the study is that psychics are healthy, mentally strong people who gain support and provide psychic healing from listening to internal voices.
Psychiatrist Albert Powers, who is heading the Yale University Study said, “We have known for some time that people in the general population can have the experience of hearing voices—sometimes frequently—without the need for psychiatric intervention.”
“Studying psychics through the lens of voice-hearing may give us important insights into why they are able to function so well without the need for psychiatric care,” he added.
Psychics have always known voices as sources of psychic healing
From the present moment to the ancient past, psychics have been part of human society.
While their gifts have always been appreciated by the clients who use them to make better decisions about themselves and loves ones, they have not always been accepted by the larger culture.
Psychics, who are most often a special class of gifted women, have been part of ancient Greek and Roman cultures as well as early Christian and Jewish civilizations.
How many people hear voices at some point in their lives?
Interestingly, most people who hear voices are not considered mentally ill. According to the authors of the Yale study, 1 in 25 people hear voices on a regular basis. Up to 40 percent will have an experience of hearing a voice at some point in their life.
Hearing voices can carry a stigma. It’s a phenomenon associated with mental conditions such as psychosis and schizophrenia.
But as psychics revealed to researchers, hearing voices can also be a source of strength, psychic healing and insight.
As voice hearers, psychics show control and grace in their abilities
The voices psychics hear are not so different from diagnosed patients. What makes psychics special is their ability to find positivity and strength in the voices they listen to.
Most powerfully, psychics have a well-trained ability to control when to tune into these voices and when to tune them out.
And unlike sufferers from schizophrenia, when psychics first told someone else they could hear voices, the news of their abilities was positively received by their friends and family.
Why researchers turned to psychics to make sense of internal voices
For over 50 years, psychiatrists and psychologists have been studying psychosis but have made little progress in understanding or treating this disabling condition.
One of the study’s authors, psychiatry professor Philip Corlett said, “These individuals [psychics] have a much higher degree of control over the voices. They also have a greater willingness to engage with and view the voices as positive or neutral to their lives.”
Instead of finding the voices distressing, psychics find insight and psychic healing in them.
As a result, psychics may be able to teach psychiatrists how to properly channel these voices to help others find fulfillment
The could use these voices to aid clients in making the decisions that lead toward a good life filled with career success and reciprocal love.
Psychics discover their talents as young children
One of the study’s most interesting insights is that psychics begin hearing voices much earlier in life.
Those who manage life with schizophrenia tend to start hearing voices around age 19. By contrast, the study’s authors said that psychics, on average, begin hearing internal voices as early as age 6.
While the reason for this difference in onset age of internal voices is not understood, it could explain why psychics have a more natural and complementary relationship with their internal voices.
Like a friend or family member we have grown up with, those voices have been talking to psychics since they were children.
As a result, they have become familiar with these insightful aides, having grown up alongside them.
Psychic gifts have been misunderstood throughout history
Just as the internal voices of the mentally ill are misunderstood, many psychics have had to defend their special abilities.
From the Roman Sibyls to the Nats of Myanmar to Native American shamans, those with psychic gifts have always played a key role in how society functioned.
They were people who were treated with great reverence for their gifts and the function they played in helping leaders make better decisions in times of crisis.
But many cultures have turned on psychics, associating them with sorcery or superstition.
So it is a good thing to see the tide changing, as medical professionals look once again to psychics for the gifts they use and channel on a daily basis.
Uncovering our personality — The goals shared by psychics and psychiatrists
While psychics and psychiatrists may have profoundly different beliefs, they share a common goal of helping clients make the right decisions to lead fruitful, love-filled lives.
For instance, a psychiatrist may help a client look for emotional triggers or coping styles to see why a relationship is floundering.
A psychic, on the other hand, may guide the client to look at the soul connections in their life, encouraging them to accept the possibility that they and their loved ones may be undergoing an incarnation from a previous life.
But the aims of both groups are similar. Both seek to uncover our real personalities that we hide under masks and deceptions.
By showing us who we really are, both professionals can lead us to be more resilient people, capable of having the strong families and loving relationships we truly desire and deserve.
Psychics don’t just hear voices, they help clients build strong relationships
As many professional psychic readers know, their clients are not always looking for psychic insight or a voice from beyond.
Many times, their clients are looking for a wise confidante or counselor who can help guide them through managing the conflict in their most cherished relationships.
So it’s important to understand that hearing voices is just one source of wisdom that psychics provide. Having counseled hundreds of clients during tough times, many psychics have hard-won insights into the relationship and career struggles that so many of us face.
After all, a visit to a psychic is not supposed to be about encountering the supernatural.
It’s about giving clients the tools she needs to make wise decisions and forge a good life for herself.
